Spalding Grammar School students make a plea for help to get Tower Radio back on air

Devastated students are appealing for help from the public to help get their in-house radio station back up and running after their equipment was damaged by a flood.

Spalding Grammar School’s Harry Walker, Connor Clarke, Damian Robinson and Charlie Booth teamed up to write an article explaining the importance of the project and to ask for your assistance. Here are their words…

The idea for Tower Radio was first conceived in 2022 when a member of staff, Mrs Chiappino, discussed how student radio could be used to bring together the school community, embrace, and promote all aspects of school life.

Students were enthusiastic about the idea and very quickly, the concept gathered momentum. Tower Radio was launched by students at Spalding Grammar School in November 2023.

Former headteacher Steven Wilkinson officially opened the station's studio, an old storage cupboard transformed to meet the station's needs, before moving on to new endeavours.

The school’s Parent Friends’ Association funded the station's equipment, but the students took the initiative to set everything up themselves. A core group composed of Connor Clarke (17), Damian Robinson (16), Charlie Booth (15), and Harry Walker (18), who serves as the station manager, even created the Tower Radio website with the help of art students for the design and branding.

Tower Radio broadcasts live on Friday lunchtimes and during open evenings and events. Students can also listen via the website at home and via pre-recorded podcasts.

However, upon return from the recent half-term break, it was discovered that a large water tank above the studio had burst, flooding the space, leaving us unable to use it.

Unfortunately, all the equipment was submerged and deemed irreparable. The discovery on Monday morning was a shock to everyone involved, but the students and staff are determined to get back on air as soon as possible!

To make this happen, we urgently need your support. If you have any old audio equipment that you no longer use, your donation could make a significant difference in helping us get back off the ground.
