Plans for new tip in Long Sutton to cater for eastern half of South Holland

Plans are in place to provide a new tip for people in the eastern half of South Holland - and it's hoped this might help in the fight against fly tipping.

Many quiet countryside spots are becoming a magnet for people to dump items - prompting concerns about blights on the countryside and fears watercourses could become blocked.

One councillor feels fines for offenders should be tougher - and that culprits need to be named and shamed - but says part of the solution could be to provide a site to make it easier for people to dispose of their rubbish.

Long Sutton councillor Jack Tyrrell revealed he has made progress with plans to establish a tip in the town.

He has been able to arrange to get hold of skips, for people to man the site and for the waste to be taken away.

Now all he needs is a site - and is looking for an acre of land somewhere in the town.

Coin Tyrrell said: “It will be something similar to Spalding, but just not on a bigger scale.

“I will do the rest - I just need a piece of land, everything else I could get.

“It has to be in Long Sutton because then it would pull in everyone from Sutton Bridge to Holbeach

“People have said they would volunteer - there’s lots of people who are retired who would help. I think we will get there with it in the end.”

The idea would be to run the facility for a few hours every Saturday morning - or maybe for longer if there are enough volunteers.

It would prevent people having to travel to Spalding Household Waste Recycling Centre, where visits currently have to be booked in advance.

The West Marsh Road facility is, however, now offering more appointments for residents - and is calling for people to make use of the time slots they have reserved, with one in six failing to show up.

Coun Tyrrell, who already offers a regular free garden waste collection for people in the area, is growing increasingly concerned about the number of reports he’s receiving of people dumping their rubbish in the district.

He added: “Fly tipping is a big one at the moment - it just seems to be everywhere

“It is costing the taxpayer lots of money. Unless the fines are £1,000, there’s no deterrent.”
