Spalding Flower Queen Becs Roberts and deputy Demi Fontaine Gilchrist take part in St Helier Jersey Battle of Flowers event
Spalding’s flower queen and her deputy enjoyed representing the town during an official trip to Jersey.
Becs Roberts and her deputy Demi Fontaine Gilchrist, took part in the Jersey Battle of Flowers Parade in an exchange visit which was organised by Steve Timewell.
As ambassadors they represented Spalding, riding in an open top Rolls Royce around St Helier and met a family on their trip who are also from Spalding.
Mr Timewell said: “Although I am not leading the Spalding project this year, I am still playing a major role and I have been honoured to continue the tradition of sending our Flower Queens to Jersey.
“I think the link between St Helier and Spalding is very important and I would like, in the future, to make more of it, perhaps a full official twinning or some kind of cultural contract.
“The girls had an amazing time in Jersey and the council there made us very welcome.
“They certainly did Spalding proud.”
Following the daytime events where they visited a museum and attended a civic reception at the town hall with St Helier Constable (mayor), Simon Crowcroft, they then took part in the moonlight parade.
They were also treated to a sightseeing tour of the island and next year’s parade will again see the St Helier Flower Queen joining the proceedings.
Mr Timewell added: “In May 2025 the St Helier flower queen will be coming to Spalding to take part in our local parade.
“I am so pleased that I managed to reinstate the link with Jersey.
“It used to be a big thing until the council decided to not bother anymore.
“It’s also a big thing for the people of Jersey and the constable has expressed an interest in making the exchange even bigger next year.”
This year’s Spalding Flower Parade will start and finish at Springfields Event and Conference Centre on May 10.
