Thrifty mum from Pinchbeck shares top tips and hacks on popular Instagram account

A savvy mum is sharing her best parenting and life hacks online to build a community and help support other families enduring tough financial times.

Self-confessed bargain-hunter Chelsea Turnell, of Pinchbeck, launched her Instagram account @thriftytipsandtripsmum in July and already has more than 3,200 people following her tips and hacks.

Since starting the account, one of the air fryer recipes she shared has been featured in a national newspaper, leading her to secure a weekly slot on radio where she shares more of her thrifty know-how.

Chelsea describes her page, which she currently runs as a hobby, as a one-stop shop for parents.

As well as reviews of family days out, which she enjoys with her three-year-old son, she also talks about money-saving advice, her weekly shop and interviews other parents about their lives.

“When you’ve been on maternity pay, you have to learn how to make your money stretch,” says Chelsea, who is the social media manager at Strands, in Spalding.

‘I’ve always enjoyed bargain hunting and as a mum I’m even more conscious of this at the moment.

“We’re all trying to make our money go further.

“I’ve set this account up as a hobby to share my tips with other families and to help build a community where people can come for support.”

Chelsea regularly posts pictures and videos on her Instagram page to help others grab a bargain or shop more savvy.

“I review days out and places to go, based on how suitable they are for different ages the facilities and the cost – it’s all paid for by myself,” she added.

“I talk about where I get my food shopping from, making the most of my food budget, what kind of meals I make, how I make money from side hustles like selling things on Vinted and Marketplace.”

Chelsea also talks about other more challenging aspects of parenting too.

Her son has been undergoing therapy for a speech delay and she is keen to use her platform to help other SEN parents find information and support.

She added: “I’ve also shared a couple of longer videos, where I chat to other parents, about their experiences, including my friend, whose son has muscular dystrophy, and another mum whose baby was born prematurely and has cerebral palsy.

“The aim of this is to help raise awareness around additional needs as well as different introductions to parenthood, so hopefully we can all find someone or something to relate to.

“I might eventually turn this side of it into a podcast, but at the moment it’s all on Instagram. I’ve just created the account to try and help other families.”
