Polka Dot Dance Academy in Spalding celebrates 10th anniversary with show

A Spalding dance school is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a special family friendly, feel-good show for the whole community to enjoy.

Becky Melton, owner of Polka Dot Dance Academy, is delighted the school has reached a special landmark and is urging everyone to support its show, which takes to the stage at the South Holland Centre this week (July 4 and 5).

There will be three performances of the all-dancing extravaganza, featuring 150 performers, aged from babies up to 21 years.

“We usually put on two shows in summer and two at Christmas, but with this one being a bit more special, we’ve added a third, so that more people from the community, not just parents, can come,” says Becky. “There’ll be all different styles of dance featured including lyrical, commercial street dance, cheerleading, contemporary and musical theatre – there’s a little bit of everything

“The music is all from the last ten years and also includes some popular themes – some of the younger children will be dancing to the Minions and others to Stranger Things. We’ve tried to include things that everyone will enjoy and make it a really feel-good family show.”

As well as performances from the school’s present pupils, there will also be a montage of clips from shows performed during the past ten years. Becky estimates Polka Dot Dance Academy has taught over a thousand children during that time and hopes former pupils will come along and support the shows too.

“The school has really grown and gone from strength to strength – we actually teach more than 200 children at the moment and are always happy for more to join.

“We’re open to all ages, girls and boys, of any ability and offer all kinds of different dance classes. People can join mid-term, we pride ourselves on being as accessible as possible – there’s no upfront costs, just come and pay for whatever you want to do,” explains Becky.

As well as lessons at its Spalding headquarters in Westlode Street, other classes are taught at Holbeach United Community Sports Academy and Peele Leisure Centre, in Long Sutton.

“We’re delighted to be celebrating our tenth anniversary! We’re really going for it with the shows and costumes- the children are so excited and looking forward to it. We hope lots of people will come along and support us,” adds Becky.

* Polka Dot Dance Academy’s ten-year anniversary shows take place at the South Holland Centre, Spalding, at 6pm, on Friday, July 4, and 1.30pm and 6pm, on Saturday, July 5. Tickets are available from the South Holland Centre.
