The result of the Spalding Business Improvement District vote has been announced

Town traders have voted to create a new ‘Business Improvement District’ for Spalding — in an incredibly close vote.

The BID was proposed as a body that could deliver change and make the town centre more attractive to visitors — and organisers have promised that it could raise £1 million over five years.

It will be partly funded via a levy on traders — a payment that proved controversial when the idea was roundly rejected more than a decade ago.

The result was officially announced by returning officer Christine Marshall at South Holland District Council this evening — and this time traders chose to create the BID, with a victory that came down to a single vote to tip it in favour.

The full result was as follows:

Total votes by number: 115

Total by value: £1,681250

Total votes in favour by number: 58

Total votes by in favour by value: £1,078,300

To be created, there needed to be a majority in favour by both number and value. For number, 50.4% were in favour. By value, the figure in favour was 64.1%.
