Spalding Christmas market cancelled due to COVID restrictions
This year's Spalding Christmas market and celebrations has been called off due to coronavirus restrictions.
South Holland District Council made the announcement at lunchtime today (Wednesday), with the decision being blamed on the county's tier 3 status.
A council spokesman said: "It is with great sadness that we have had to take the difficult decision that it will not be possible for this year's festive market in Spalding to go ahead.
"This is always a highlight of the calendar for residents, visitors, traders and the council, so it is not a decision that has been taken lightly.
"This is a crucial time for the country, with the rollout of vaccines due to start soon, and it is as important as ever that we all continue to do all we can to prevent the spread of the virus and follow the guidelines in place.
"Markets play a crucial role in the opportunity to purchase items in an efficient and outdoor environment.
"But given the district's current position in tier 3, we should still be doing what we can to discourage any social gatherings and non-essential travel.
"Reflecting on the wider national experience at similar events, we would not be able to provide the entertainment and festive experience that visitors would expect and enjoy.
"We understand that this is disappointing news for us all, but hope you can understand the reasons why we have had to reach this difficult decision.
"We look forward to welcoming people back this time next year for the fantastic festive event that we all deserve to enjoy."
