Spalding sports club pays tribute after member passes away, aged 88

A dad-of-three from Sutterton who found a passion for indoor bowls after overcoming a series of strokes has passed away, aged 88.

Alan Garrett, who was a member of Spalding Indoor Bowls Club for about 15 years, was described by club chairman Roger Perkins as a man who "who loved his bowls and enjoyed the company of fellow bowlers".

Mr Garrett, who most recently ran a kitchen and bathroom fitting company in Boston, is survived by wife Beryl (83), three children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs Garrett said: "Alan didn't take up bowls until well after he had his strokes about 15 years ago and when he was badly disabled.

"But he could turn his hand to anything and he has the most fantastic memory.

"Bowling was his life, he loved the camaraderie of it and he was so proud when he was in the team that went to the Potters Bowls Tournament in Norfolk two years ago."

Mr Perkins said: "Alan struggled with illness for quite a long while.

"But he went away with us on club trips and was part of a completely rookie team that went to the Potters' event in 2018 and won the Top Club Trophy for their outstanding performances over the week.

"I had a lot of respect for Alan and the way in which he continued with his life, despite his struggle with health issues.

"He was a man who loved his bowls and enjoyed the company of fellow bowlers."
