Project finally succeeds in getting Spalding community speed watch established

Volunteers armed with speed cameras will soon be patrolling Spalding town centre after years of trying to get the scheme off the ground.

Speed watch co-ordinator Coun Jan Whitbourn has been trying for more than five years to get a scheme running in Spalding - but had struggled to insurance issues.

Volunteers’ activities are usually covered by the public liability insurance of parish councils across the area – but this wasn’t possible as Spalding doesn’t have a dedicated parish or town council.

Coun Whitbourn had approached a number of organisations over the years to see if the group could be covered by their insurance without success – but the police have now agreed to do this.

She said: “We have been trying to do this for six years.

“It is going to make a big difference in town. I get a lot of emails from different people who are cross about speeding down their roads.”

Problems have been raised in Bourne Road and Halmer Gate.

Coun Whitbourn is now appealing for volunteers to get in touch with her to undertake the training and is also hoping to find a team co-ordinator.
