Dedicated volunteers work their magic to tidy The Crescent, in Spalding
A group of dedicated volunteers have been hard at work tidying a ‘neglected and overlooked’ town street, as part of a community clear-up project.
The condition of The Crescent in Spalding, has been raised by businesses and shoppers, who were fed-up with the unruly overgrown weeds and run down appearance of the town’s former Sorting Office.
Many business owners have previously raised their concerns over the condition of the shopping area, and worry it could push people away. They also called on developers to speed up construction work at the prominent grot spot site, to boost the area’s image.
Spalding Wygate councillor Aaron Spencer, who is also a property consultant at The Crescent’s Sedge Homes, decided to organise a community clear-up after receiving comments about the state of the street from passers-by.
The idea was supported by Coun Ingrid Sheard, Coun Thomas Sneath, Vanessa Browning and other volunteers, who got their hands dirty last week.
Coun Sheard said: “I am here today because I am happy to support the local community. The Crescent, I believe, is the jewel in the crown and I feel it is overlooked and neglected.
“It’s important we get it improved for the town and in time for The Crescent Christmas Spectacular event and hopefully it will be brought to life with a variety of events to highlight the space in the future.
“We have set aside a couple of hours to clear away the weeds and rubbish but if it needs extra time, we will arrange another day to come out and do it again.”
Coun Spencer added: “Sedge feels passionate about supporting the community and as an estate agent, I think it is an important thing to do.”
