Remnants of cannabis farm dumped in Sutton Bridge will need specialists to remove, councillors were told

Remnants of what is said to have been a cannabis farm dumped on the side of a road is one of a series of fly-tipping issues which are blighting a village.

Sutton Bridge councillors have been highlighting the problems with fly-tipping in the village for some time - and residents leaving out the bin bags on the wrong days is also compounding the trouble.

Debris had been left in Kestrel Close - and parish councillors were told that specialists will need to be called in to remove the mess.

After the meeting South Holland District Council has disputed what the waste was.

Sutton Bridge ward member, Coun Michael Booth, highlighted the problem of fly-tipping in the area and the lack of results from the Kingdom - the company which was brought in by South Holland District Council to tackle enviro-crimes - at a recent Performance Monitoring Panel meeting.

Refuse bags being left out on the wrong day is causing a mess in Chestnut Terrace, parish councillors were told on Tuesday.

Refuse and recycling collections take place on Wednesdays but bags are being left out on the wrong day.

Speaking at the meeting Coun Chris Brewis said: “We need to encourage people to be proud of their environment and country.

“In Germany and Scandinavia, there would be a heavy arm on your shoulder and a fine of 100 Euros there and then if you dropped litter.

“That is why nobody drops litter in those countries - I think it is getting serious here.”

The bags had been ripped open possibly by animals and rubbish has then been strewn across the road.

Coun Brewis feels this can be easily solved with residents knowing the correct collection days and not leaving bags out several days earlier.

He also praised the work of the Sutton Bridge Wombles, a group of volunteers led by Deanne Gough and Andy Tilley who regularly keep the area tidy.

He said: “They do an incredible job.

“We will be presenting them with a trophy at the Curlew Centre.

“I am sure they would be absolutely thrilled if new volunteers joined the group.”

The Wombles fill hundreds of bags of rubbish weekly from areas in the village including Railway Lane and the laybys on the A17.

Following the recent parish council meeting at Sutton Bridge a spokesperson from South Holland District Council said: “The report stated that there was construction waste, waste bags, lots of foam or house insulation, and lots of black bags.

“This was visited by the removal team who on arrival confirmed that it was on private land and will be the responsibility of the farmer/land owner to remove.”
