Bonmarché wins best dressed window in movie-themed Spalding Flower Parade competition with Wizard of Oz display
The winner of the Flower Parade shop window competition can now be revealed - with a specially-made rosette going to the traders who wowed us with the best display.
Thousands of people attended the Spalding Flower Parade and businesses on Sheep Market, Hall Place, Market Place, Holland Market and Little London got into the spirit and dressed their windows with movie themes.
The Spalding Guardian was invited by organiser Stephen Timewell to choose the winning window display and first place goes to Bonmarché (Wizard of Oz) with second place to Charmed Interiors (Barbie) and Robert Goddard (Up) in third.
Bonmarché supervisor Trudy Herd said: “It was a pleasure to do the window displays and it was a whole team effort.
“It was lovely to see the crowds and the parade is great for the community.
“There was a fantastic atmosphere in town.”
The Wizard of Oz display included knitted and crocheted flowers with a home-made cushion, scarecrow and trees.
A pair of red shoes had been given the sparkly treatment with glitter — similar to the shoes Dorothy wore in the film — and attention to detail and community spirit helped to decide Bonmarché as winners.
In second place Charmed Interiors had a bright pink window display reflecting the movie Barbie.
The theme was a team idea and put together by Lizzie Bradley with a staff member saying that it was good to support the town.
Staff at Robert Goddard blew up several balloons before the shop opened on the day of the parade to decorate their window in the style of the animated film Up.
Emily Davy, sales associate said: “The parade is good for Spalding town and there were loads of people around.
“It helped with trade and we served Prosecco and beer. It would be nice to have more events.
“The display was all handmade and we spent ages blowing up balloons.”
It was a close contest with Alice in Wonderland displays from Penningtons, Spalding Library and Furniture Warehouse, Molsom and Associates (Paddington), Little London Boutique (Tangled), Becca’s Ice Cream (Frozen), Gibbs (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Shoppe (Bob the Builder) and Element 78 (Love Actually).
Vicky Harvey, manager at Molsom and Associates opticians, said: “We love the atmosphere and visitors it brings to Spalding.
“As a business we enjoy getting involved in decorating our windows and sponsoring where we can.
“Well done to all the volunteers who made it possible.”
