Work starts to repair historic Spalding pub

Work has finally started to repair an historic pub nearly a year after it was damaged in a crash.

The bay windows of Ye Olde White Horse in Spalding have been boarded up since it was damaged in a two-vehicle crash on November 30 last year.

But builders were spotted at the Churchgate pub earlier today (Tuesday, November 26) beginning to rectify the damage.

In March, RN Wooler and Co were given the green light by South Holland District Council to rebuild the bay window with the work set to include installing new hardwood timber windows and replacing a displaced steel beam with an oak beam.

An officer’s report issued said the ‘proposal assists greatly in enhancing and conserving the value and significance of the heritage asset’ and confirmed that listed building consent was now granted for the work.

The 17th century pub building – owned by Samuel Smith’s Brewery – has been shut since 2019.

The council has been in talks with a brewery to try to encourage them to maintain the appearance of the town landmark.

Spalding Flower Parade volunteers had brightened up the pub’s appearance in time for the big event in May when they covered over the boards with a colourful display.

A BMW and Renault Clio were involved in the collision which resulted in damage to the building on November 30. Firefighters from Spalding and Donington attended the incident and cut free one casualty.
