Welland Yacht Club’s Paddle Trophy awarded to Alan Cox after two wins from three races on Sunday

Alan Cox picked up two wins to take the overall victory at the Welland Paddle Trophy event on Sunday.

With very little wind to greet the seven competitors, in total contrast to the previous weekend, a short course was set for the first race, which was won by Helen Boyd.

Alan Chapman (Laser) got away first from the Solo of Boyd, just ahead of Alan Cox (Laser). They were followed by Adam Stabler (Laser), Richard Stedman (Comet), William Stabler (Solo) and Jerrit Schrauwers (Laser).

Cox was first to round the top mark (buoy 2), followed by Boyd then Chapman, Stedman, Schrauwers, Adam Stabler and then William Stabler.

Boyd and Stedman were trying to stay within handicap on the faster laser in front of them. Apart from an error from Schrauwers, allowing Adam Stabler to get past, the finishing order would remain.

With handicaps applied Boyd took the win from Cox in second, Stedman third and Chapman in fourth.

The course was lengthened for race two and Cox got ahead of Boyd, with Adam Stabler third, ahead of Schrauwers, Stedman and William Stabler.

Unfortunately, William Stabler would find himself stuck in the reeds and despite several attempts to free himself had to retire following assistance.

Schrauwers also found the reeds but would eventually be able to get free.

Cox was again first across the line followed by Adam Stabler, then Boyd, Stedman and Schrauwers. However, this time Cox had enough lead to keep the win with Stedman moving up two places to second from Boyd in third, Stabler taking fourth and Schrauwers in fifth.

Cox again took the lead from the start of race three and would keep it to the finish.

With handicaps applied, Stedman moved up to second and Adam Stabler dropped to third. Schrauwers, Boyd and William Stabler made up the six finishers.
