Spalding United beat Biggleswade Town in the Southern League Premier Division Central

A fantastic first half performance helped fire Spalding United to victory before fending off a Biggleswade fightback in Saturday's Southern League clash.

The Tulips netted four goals without reply inside the opening 35 minutes of their Premier Division Central clash.

However, the Waders cut the deficit early in the second half before scoring twice more to set up a tense finish for Jimmy Dean's side.

Despite the eventual narrow margin of the win, the Tulips boss was pleased to return to winning ways after last weekend's home loss to Harborough Town.

He said: "Ultimately the win was all that mattered but I don't think the second half played out like the score reflects.

"We had four or five clear-cut chances but we were not anywhere near as clinical as we had been in the first half.

"There is stuff we could have done better for all three goals but I'm just happy to have come away with a win and nothing is going to dampen that."

The Tulips made a couple of changes to their starting line-up from the previous weekend's loss with Glenn Walker being brought back in and Jack Roberts making his first start.

And it was the recent recruit from Bishop's Stortford who put Spalding in front after just two minutes when he curled home a fine finish.

The lead was doubled five minutes later as James Clifton - who was moved into attack with Bart Cybulski dropping to the substitutes' bench - releasing Joe Nyahwema who slotted home the second goal.

Clifton was then brought down in the box midway through the first half and Dan Lawlor stepped up to score the resultant spot kick.

A fourth Spalding goal then arrived 10 minutes before half-time when home defender Patrick Staszewski turned a cross into his own net.

Biggleswade rallied at the break and reduced the arrears within three minutes of the restart when Callum Wilson netted with a fine long effort.

Wilson repeated the feat eight minutes later for Biggleswade's second goal with Spalding missing some good chances to regain their comfortable advantage.

Joshua Steele then converted a set piece in the final minute but Spalding saw out the injury-time to record back-to-back away wins.

Dean added: "We made a few changes because we had only scored seven goals in the last eight games beforehand.

"We had to freshen it up to try and do something different and we looked potent, even in the second half on the counter-attack.

"I felt the substitutes came on and impacted the game really well at 4-2. They did fantastically well and managed the game."

The win leaves Spalding in ninth spot, seven points adrift of the play-off places with seven games remaining. They host Hitchin Town on Saturday.

Spalding: Chapman, Walker, Fox (Brown), Moore, Cartwright, Lawlor (Cybulski), Sembie-Ferris (Sani), Freeman, Clifton, Roberts (Law), Nyahwema (Chettle). Attendance: 191.
