Long Sutton Hockey Club round-up

A 20-minute purple patch laid the foundations for Long Sutton's victory over Cambridge University 2nds on Saturday.

The Greens scored three times in a terrific spell before running out 4-1 winners in the East League Division 1N clash.

Sutton were pleased to include Josh Fyson for his first game of the season after injury and also the recall of experienced defender Tom Baguley.

However, for the first 19 minutes, Cambridge dictated play but were thwarted by excellent defending.

Sutton then had their sensational spell by using the quick through ball to devastating effect as they took the lead when Josh Baker rounded the keeper to slot home.

Dan Batten then raced into the circle and squared the ball to Mackenzie East who, diving at full stretch, guided it into the back of the net to double the lead.

A third goal then followed as another quick move enabled veteran Nick Ellis to calmly smack a loose ball into the goal.

It put Sutton in control at the break and 10 minutes into the second half they added a fourth as Baker picked up a long ball and drew the keeper to score from a narrow angle.

The visitors piled on the pressure in a bid to find a way back into the game and forced several short corners but found keeper James Cliff in great form by saving everything thrown at him.

The defence, marshalled by the excellent Baguley, held out until on the final whistle when the visitors managed to squeeze a short corner over the line.

It took nothing away from a great result for Sutton who travel to St Ives on Saturday looking to secure back-to-back wins to start the new year.

The second team shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw at Pelicans in Division 3NW with Ed White among their goalscorers.

The ladies' first team also picked up a point after a goalless draw away at Cambridge City 6ths in Division 3NW.

Emma Grosvenor scored the goal for the ladies' second team as they were defeated 2-1 in their away match at Newmarket 3rds in Division 5NW.
