Spalding United sign former Accrington Stanley and Peterborough United goalkeeper Aaron Chapman
Former Accrington Stanley and Peterborough United goalkeeper Aaron Chapman has joined Spalding United.
The 34-year-old was on the substitutes' bench for the Tulips' match at Bedford Town in the Southern League Premier Division Central on Saturday.
He is expected to take over the goalkeeping duties from Tony Breeden having previously worked with Spalding manager Jimmy Dean at Scunthorpe United.
The 6ft 8ins custodian has been playing in the National League North this season with Hereford and will be an excellent replacement for Breeden who was part of Spalding's title-winning squad last season and has been an ever-present this term.
Boss Dean explained: "I've worked with Chappy previously and he's a great goalkeeper.
"He's a great lad who has become available and the reason that we've done it is because Tony has asked to leave and he goes with my complete blessing.
"When I came in, I said to all of the boys that were here that, if they wanted to go, then they had to let me know and I would do my best to facilitate it.
"Tony has got something on his door-step with a view to next season as well with a good club and a good deal.
"I've had my ups and downs with him when I came in but I want to give him my gratitude publically.
"He's been fantastic and has just got better and better. I wish him all the best from my heart.
"I'm delighted to have Chappy in and we'll try and move forward quickly."
Chapman made more than 60 appearances in the Football League for Accrington before joining Peterborough.
He had spells at Tranmere Rovers, Motherwell, Gillingham and Stevenage before linking up with Dean at Scunthorpe.
After leaving the Iron, he played for Boston United last season and has also featured for Worksop Town this term.
Chapman is in line to make his Spalding debut next weekend when the Tulips travel to Bishop's Stortford.
