Holbeach United are hosting the Pete Cousins Memorial Cup when they take on Boston United Under 23s

Holbeach United will be remembering a club legend in an annual match at Carter's Park tonight (Wednesday).

The Tigers are staging the Pete Cousins Memorial Cup when they take on Boston United Under 23s (7.45pm).

The club stalwart served the Tigers for 75 years and first team boss Callum Lawe insists his side will be going all out to win the game in his memory.

Lawe said: "We want to give something back to the club and show how much it means to us.

"I never got to meet Pete personally but he was someone who was around the club for such a long time.

"A lot of people speak so highly of him and you want that memory to live on.

"It's a nice occasion for his family and obviously the club to come together to appreciate him.

"It's a game that we want to make sure we take seriously and it's going to be a different test to probably what we're used to."

Admission for the match is £4 for adults, £2 senior citizens and £1 for children. There will also be a programme and 50/50 draw on the night.

Holbeach go into the game buoyed by a 2-1 home victory over Wivenhoe in the second Thurlow League meeting in seven days between the two clubs.

The Tigers had triumphed 3-1 on their travels last weekend and backed it up with another three point haul on Saturday to move up into 10th place in the table.

Lawe commented: "We initially wanted four points from the two games against them.

"Obviously, after beating them away last weekend, there was no other option than getting three points at home.

"It puts a little bit more daylight between ourselves and the objective of survival, but also you've now got like a little bit of an eye on results going our own way and could we get a bit of momentum going to move higher up the table."

Holbeach had started brightly on Saturday but fell behind midway through the first half when Harry Conway put the Essex visitors ahead from the penalty spot.

The Tigers created a couple of openings late in the opening period but were unable to force an equaliser which sparked a double change at half-time.

Marley Hamilton and Josh Williams were both brought on at the break with Sam Carter also entering the fray around the hour mark.

Just like last weekend when changes at the interval resulted in goals, Holbeach struck twice in the second half through Hamilton to take the win.

He controlled a cross on his chest before driving home the equaliser and then netting the winner in style as he cut inside before rifling his shot into the top left-hand corner of the Wivenhoe goal.

Holbeach will be back in Division One North action on Saturday when they travel to face Gorleston Reserves.
