Campaign concludes for Welland Yacht Club
Welland Yacht Club concluded a season which has been impacted by the water level for the vast majority of it with the staging of the Brass Monkey Trophy competition.
A turn-out of 10 boats set out at the start where the races were also incorporated into the overall Frostbite Series.
The wind gods were against the sailors as the breeze was just about sufficient to enable racing to take place under a grey sky with misty conditions and a reduced water level once again.
With the lack of breeze, it was important to make a good getaway for clear air and it was Andy Prior in the Laser who judged the port end start.
He headed out in front but was being caught by Andy Agar with Emma Agar and Alan Cox being followed by Mark Scourfield, Helen Boyd and Richard Stedman who were keeping in touch.
Prior then started to extend his lead as some of the remaining boats decided to call it a day and retire.
Cox and Emma Agar were able to pass Andy Agar were the run back becoming quicker due to the flow of the river.
The second lap followed the same pattern with Prior extending his lead while there was some close racing between the boats of Cox and the Agar family.
Stedman found some boat speed in the Comet and was making ground and was in contention in the higher handicap boat.
Prior crossed the line well ahead of the rest and, in the next bunch, it was Cox who was followed by Emma Agar who just sneaked in front of dad Andy.
Scourfield was then followed closely by Stedman who had made inroads on the run and Boyd.
When the handicaps were applied, it was a clear win for the individual Brass Monkey Trophy for Prior who was followed by Stedman in second place.
Scourfield was third, five seconds ahead of Andy Agar in fourth who was 12 seconds ahead of Cox with Emma Agar in sixth and Boyd seventh.
Scourfield was the overall winner of the Frostbite Series ahead of Alastair Mitchell and Alan Chapman.
