Reaction from Spalding United manager Jimmy Dean after their victory over AFC Sudbury

Manager Jimmy Dean feels his Spalding United side are in a good place to enhance their early season progress following an emphatic home win on Saturday.

The Tulips ran out 5-1 winners over AFC Sudbury in the Southern League Premier Division Central clash at the Sir Halley Stewart ground.

It maintained Spalding's grip on second spot in the standings and cemented their place as the leading goalscorers in the division.

Dean said: "It's coming together lovely and we're getting better and better every week.

"We've still got gears to go through and I thought you saw a little bit of that on Saturday.

"We've just got to keep progressing through our gears because we're in a good place at the moment."

Spalding had to hit back after conceding the first goal to their Suffolk visitors at the weekend.

Ben Hart equalised for the Tulips before further goals followed from Jack Roberts, Bart Cybulski, Yusifu Ceesay and James Clifton.

Dean added: "This pitch is going to be a great help to us and you could see the confidence in the players.

"Once we get in front, we're a hard side to contain because we've got the tools to really hurt sides.

"Going a goal down is where teams want us because they drop in but this pitch allows us to go and hurt them with a different method of football.

"We're in a good place and we've now got to just keep ticking these games off."

While his side are free-scoring at one end of the pitch, Dean does want his side to cut out conceding sloppy goals at the other end.

He commented: "We've played 10 games away from home and we're still the top goalscorers in the league so logic tells you that you're going to score more goals at home.

"We know that goals will come with the ability which we've got and hopefully the way in which we play football.

"We now want to start turning those ones into zeros at the other end because, when you look at the game on Saturday, they only had about three shots.

"We don't need to be conceding those sorts of goals because it makes it look like things are uncomfortable when they're not."

Spalding are back in Southern League action on Tuesday night when they host Royston Town.
