Summer reading challenge set to launch at libraries in Stamford, Bourne and Rutland

Youngsters are once again urged to get involved in the summer reading challenge.

Lincolnshire County Council runs the challenge, which is organised by charity The Reading Agency and the UK public library network, to encourage children aged from four to 11 to keep reading during the summer holidays.

The challenge combines free access to books with fun, creative activities during the summer holidays. Throughout the challenge, library staff support the children, helping them to discover new authors and illustrators and to explore a wide range of different types of books and ways of reading.

At Stamford Library in the High Street, children have already started signing up and author Hannah Gold will be at the library on Saturday (July 31) for the official launch of this year’s challenge. Numbers will be limited so we are asking people to book their place.

Hannah is the author of ‘The Last Bear’, a book chosen by the Reading Agency as recommended reading as it is a perfect fit for the theme of this year’s challenge which is ‘Wild World Heroes’.

The challenge will also be taking place at Bourne Library and at libraries across Rutland.

How the challenge works

  • Children sign up through their local core library and receive a Wild World Heroes collector poster
  • Children set a reading goal and borrow and read library books of their own choice during the summer, collecting special stickers to complete their poster and prizes for every two book read and there are extra incentives along the way
