Edith Weston Primary School receives donations from Waterproof and Wellies Project part of The Outdoor Guide, founded by Julia Bradbury and Gina Bradbury Fox

A Rutland primary school has become the first in county to receive waterproof and wellies kits as part of a mission to aid outdoor learning.

On Wednesday last week, Edith Weston Primary School received a donation as part of the Waterproof and Wellies Project, launched by Gina Bradbury Fox, who co-founded The Outdoor Guide with her TV presenter sister, Julia Bradbury.

Gina, who attended Edith Weston Primary when she was a child, said: “Lack of access to weatherproof clothing is a real barrier for children engaging in outdoor learning."

The project aims to donate 10 Waterproof and Wellies kits to every primary school in the UK, following figures which reveal there are more than 20,000 primary schools where a number of families do not have easy access to the right gear to enjoy the outdoors.

The Waterproof and Wellies Project officially kicked off in March with Gemma Hunt, CBBC TV presenter. Since then, Midlands delivery haulier, Sanderson, has delivered kits to more than 120 different schools and donations were made by Land Rover.

Deputy headteacher of Edith Weston Primary School, Penny Rawlings, said: “When we have taken learning outdoors we have seen amazing results – the children are engaged in the tasks, cooperate brilliantly and really enjoy this part of their curriculum.

"We’re delighted to be working with The Waterproof and Wellies Project, ensuring that all our children can experience the benefits of playing and learning in the great outdoors.”

The Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness was on hand at the school to present the primary school children the kits.

She said: “This is a really wonderful initiative that provides school children with the necessary equipment to get outside and enjoy nature.”
