Rutland County Council to replace fleet of bin and road cleaning lorries
A council will replace its fleet of bin and road cleaning lorries.
Rutland County Council has approved a budget of £2.068 million to buy new bin lorries and road cleaners.
There are seven regularly used bin lorries with two spares, and a further 10 vehicles provide street cleaning services, bulky collections and support the tips.
Fifteen of these require replacement.
Explaining the need for the vehicles, Coun Christine Wise (Lib Dem), said: “There is a life expectancy for these vehicles of seven years, and all of ours have been going a lot longer.
“It is imperative that our vehicles are replaced in May 2024, and unfortunately, because of their age, it is the majority of the fleet that will need replacing.
“As you would expect, with my environmental hat on, I have questioned why we would be investing in diesel trucks; but with vehicles this size trying to make the fleet greener would need a number of infrastructure considerations costed and put in place before we could do that.”
As soon as the new lorries are bought councillors will look ahead for when they next need replacing in 2031.
Members of Rutland County Council approved the spend by majority vote in a private session at a meeting on Monday (September 4).
