Stamford parade of floats will not return after the Kiwanis announce they are stepping down
Organisers of Stamford's parade of floats have announced that they will no longer be holding the event.
The parade has been a key part of the town's calendar since 1978.
Stamford and District Kiwanis have been unable to hold the parade for the past three years as a result of the pandemic and, this year, the roadworks in Red Lion Square.
They had hoped to bring the event back in 2023, but club president Keith Williamson has now announced that the club is stepping down from the event.
Members hope someone else will come forward to take it on.
Keith said: “The club has reluctantly decided to discontinue arranging and managing the annual parade of floats from 2023.
“The Kiwanis have been proud to be involved in the parade over more than 40 years. It used to be a significant event in the local community’s annual calendar with many hundreds of people and groups taking part.
“Sadly, this decision is in common with the cessation of many similar events around the country."
The club said it has become increasingly difficult to organise the parade as a result of health and safety regulations.
Keith added: "The numerous additional compliance issues for participants, drivers and organisers have resulted in many local groups, that used to take part, deciding to no longer join in the parade in its previous format."
The Kiwanis have made the announcement now to allow time for any potential new organisers to take over the event, and have offered to advise anyone who is interested.
The club will now focus its efforts on another summer event, which it says will be "better matched to the needs of our modern community".
The Kiwanis have thanked all the organisations, transport companies, the Stamford Festival committee, and town and county councillors who have supported the event over the years.
