Cake sale in St Michael’s churchyard helps Stamford woman with breast cancer

A sale of ‘international cakes and bakes’ has raised money to support a mother diagnosed with cancer.

The event was held in St Michael’s churchyard off Stamford High Street and featured cakes made from recipes popular in Ukraine, Slovakia, Poland, Czechia, Guatemala, Hungary, Spain, Venezuela, Latvia and Chile.

Lenka from Cafe Black at the bottom of Ironmonger Street contributed cakes for the event, as did Boho Cakery by Sandija.

Two £30 gift vouchers donated by Pizza Express were raffled, along with a £20 Inspire Salon voucher donated by Stamford College.

The chance to win a meal for two and a bottle of wine at Ask in St John’s Street is open until Saturday, October 28, with raffle tickets available in Ask.

The bake sale raised £745 for Gabi, a married mother-of-two from Slovakia, who lives in Stamford.

Gabi was diagnosed at the end of July with breast cancer and has had to put on hold her job at Pizza Express.

Her friends set up a JustGiving page to raise £5,000 to help her husband to pay their mortgage, and to provide some nursery care for her three-year-old son. So far they have collected more than £4,200.

After the cake sale, Gabi said: “It was wonderful. I am so pleased to have such beautiful people around me.

“Thank you for everything.”
