General Election 2019: North West Cambridgeshire - Green Party Nicola Day

I have lived and worked in Peterborough since childhood. My Dad worked for Balfour Beatty and then became a milkman, delivering around Orton in Peterborough, where I grew up. My mum worked in trading standards at Peterborough City Council.

After having my son, I gained a teaching qualification from Cambridge University.

I’ve since dedicated my career to teaching in Peterborough, where I teach English at GCSE level.

I have also taught young people with disabilities at Peterborough Regional College and developed educational programmes for schools and communities when I worked at John Clare Cottage. Dubbed ‘the first environmental poet’, John Clare sought to protect the natural environment from land enclosures which threatened to turn common land and countryside into farmland.

I was elected as Peterborough City Council’s second Green councillor in May for Orton Waterville ward, the very same ward I grew up in. I am part of a ‘Green team’ here, that tackles everything from fly-tipping, to shelter belt maintenance, from creating wildflower meadows to campaigning to make our roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

If elected, I will fight for more sustainable transport networks and prioritise active travel such as walking and cycling. I will campaign to retrofit homes so they are more energy-efficient, and I will work hard to put our constituency on the map for delivery of green jobs and the creation of more green businesses.

As a teacher, I observe how our schools struggle to cope with swingeing Government cuts to non-core subjects, teaching assistants and classroom resources.

If elected as your MP I will campaign to ensure all schools are fairly funded. I will fight to scrap narrow accountability measures such as SATs, league tables and Ofsted, and campaign for the introduction of holistic, teacher-led assessment. I will fight to see children with special educational needs and disabilities receive high quality education that enables them to thrive.

This ‘climate emergency election’ is the final chance in a generation to protect the planet. Westminster needs more Green MPs who truly understand this and who will fight to protect our wellbeing, our diversity and our world.
