South Kesteven District Council’s chairperson from Stamford will raise money for Military VS Cancer
The new chairperson of a council has chosen a charity close to her heart to raise money for.
South Kesteven District Council’s chairperson Coun Gloria Johnson, from Stamford, has selected Military VS Cancer as her charity.
She will raise funds for the small charity through a number of events during her one year in office.
Coun Johnson said: “I chose this as I wanted to support a military charity because of my background but also one that is a small organisation.”
Coun Johnson’s husband was in the military and it was his posting at RAF North Luffenham in 1980 which prompted her move to the area.
Military vs Cancer aims to provide relief to people with cancer serving the United Kingdom.
This includes helping with treatment, care, research and emotional support to patients and their families.
“It is really close to my heart to support them,” she said.
“It is a hard life for people in the military and their families.”
She added: “People in the forces who are diagnosed with cancer cannot carry on working.”
