Letter of the week: Help turn around fortune of Oakham High Street after bank closures
Much comment has been made recently about the number of shops that have closed in Oakham town centre. It could be said that it has become something of an epidemic!
With the planned closure of both Barclays and HSBC Rutland will have the unenviable distinction of being, probably, the first county in England without any of the main High Street banks!
So what can be done to turn things around?
Oakham Town Partnership is planning to hold a meeting in Oakham, with interested parties, to explore what may be done to bring about a change in the fortunes of our businesses in the town centre.
If you are a business owner and interested in joining this meeting please e-mail us at townpartnership@outlook.com or contact the chairperson on 01572 335138.

Chairperson, Oakham Town Partnership
I would like to thank those responsible at the HSBC bank for deciding to pause the closure of the HSBC bank branch in Oakham until a LINK banking hub is created in Oakham.
I have been using the ATM at the HSBC bank branch in Oakham since the NatWest bank closed its Oakham branch a couple of years ago. The nearest NatWest bank branch is now in Melton Mowbray, a train ride away which is not practicable. In that time the HSBC ATM has only been out of order once, so I used the ATM at Barclays, but that bank branch is closing soon I hear.
I thank HSBC for their decision to pause the closure of their bank branch in Oakham which will be a great help to many people who are unable otherwise to get to a bank branch.
