Labour candidate wins Oakham North West ward by-election on Rutland County Council
The Labour candidate won the Oakham North West by-election on Rutland County Council yesterday (Thursday, November 4), making her the first Labour councillor since 1999.
Leah Toseland was elected with 293 votes and will serve as a Rutland County Councillor until the next round of normal council elections in 2023.
The full result was:
- Daniel Bottomley (The Conservative Party): 175 votes
- Leah Toseland (Labour Party): 293 votes - ELECTED
A committed local community activist, Leah stood on a pledge to shake up a Rutland County Council dominated by “business as usual” politicians who she said had failed to deliver for local people.
Leah said: “It’s an honour to have been elected by the people of Oakham North West and I am excited to get stuck in on the council.
"I have been campaigning on the lack of GP services locally and look forward to working with other councillors to ensure that MP Alicia Kearns’ election promise of a second GP surgery for Oakham, is fulfilled. We also need to secure additional health services at Rutland Memorial Hospital so people do not have to travel to access health care.
“I’ll also use my position to protect the green belt and will oppose building on greenfield sites. And on November 8, I will be presenting the deposition of the Catmose Pool petition.”
