Letter of the week: Banking hub in Oakham could solve cash issue

A concerned Oakham resident has written a letter about the lack of banks in the town.

Oakham slowly but ever so surely is being stripped of its financial services infrastructure.

Commencing with the closure one of the country’s finest Post Offices, the closure of NatWest and Lloyds will be followed soon by that of the HSBC branch.

This week they announced the closure of a quarter of their branch network. I wrote to our council months ago imploring them to prepare the way for a joint bank hub and create the third such facility in the country. A deafening silence ensued.

We have not yet become a cashless society and our population, not to mention our high street and market place traders, deserve such enlightened infrastructure. One never knows but we might just get our ‘Post Office’ back.
