Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland holds reception at Oakham Castle for deputies

New Deputy Lord-Lieutenants of Rutland have been welcomed to their roles at a reception in Oakham Castle.

The Lord-Lieutenant, Dr Sara Furness and her 13 deputies act as representatives of the Queen.

They play a key role in celebrating and encouraging the work of Rutland’s volunteers, fundraisers and those who make notable achievements in the world of business and enterprise.

In her speech at the reception, Dr Furness welcomed Bart Hellyer as Vice Lord-Lieutenant, and Air Vice Marshal Nigel Sudborough, Kathleen Robinson, Jeannette Warner and Jamie Weir as deputy lieutenants.

She also highlighted their role in fostering good relations between the military and community, and spoke of how lucky she felt to live in a county with such a strong spirit of altruism.

Speaking afterwards, she said: “It was lovely to celebrate having new deputies join us and to thank those who have just retired. The event was delightful.

“The deputies provide enormous support in making sure that we recognise the work people in Rutland put into their community.

“We have a sophisticated system for appreciating people in this country, which starts with the Queen’s honours and her garden party and includes the lord-lieutenant and the deputies’ roles in visiting people on her behalf and showing appreciation for their work.”
