New homes could be built on the edge of Oakham
A new housing development could be built on the eastern side of Oakham.
County councillors will decide next week whether to grant planning permission for 213 homes on land off Burley Road.
The properties would sit on either side of the Co-op supermarket and stretch towards Rutland Veterinary Centre on Ashwell Road.
Planning officers have recommended the scheme be approved, with the site having been included in the now-abandoned local plan.
Rutland County Council has received 21 objections to the scheme, including concerns from Barleythorpe Parish Council and the Campaign to Protect Rural England.
The parish council said: “The council’s main concerns are the lack of community infrastructure.
“The development will increase the already overstretched primary care services and the number of dwellings proposed will put additional pressure on local schools.
“It is also a matter of concern that the plan will take up agricultural land which is becoming an increasingly valuable asset.”
Other concerns include the estate only having one access point from Burley Road, the increase in traffic and the visual impact on the approach from Burley-on-the-Hill.
A decision will be made by the council’s planning committee at a meeting on Tuesday, October 25 at 7pm.
