Owner of Rolo the snake talks of her relief after pet python is found in Wymondham
A snake called Rolo sent his owner into a spin after he escaped from his tank and slithered out an open window.
It’s safe to say the three-foot long Ball Python also caused a certain amount of anxiety among Amber Grove’s neighbours in the village of Wymondham over the weekend.
Luckily, the mischievous serpent was found safe and well in their front garden on Sunday evening after two days on the ‘run’.
Amber’s mum Megan spotted him curled up near a planter and quickly told her delighted daughter the good news.
“It’s the one time I was thankful she smokes!” said Amber, 17, who attends Melton Vale Sixth Form College.
“He was freezing cold but apart from that he was fine. I was so relieved! I had been prepared to lose him forever.”
Rolo’s great escape happened after Amber set up his tank ahead of a house move on Friday.
“I put him in and thought I’d leave the window open because it was hot,” she said. “He’s only got out of his tank once before so I thought he’d be fine.
“I went in the next morning and saw my plant pot strewn across the floor and he wasn’t in his tank. There were tears shed and I was really upset.
“He must have flung himself out the window, which is on the second floor. Either that or he climbed up a wire and over the roof. I don’t know how he didn’t hurt himself.”
Amber put a post on Facebook and soon everyone in the village seemed to know about Rolo’s disappearing act.
One woman wrote on the social media website: “I have just locked myself in the bathroom and put a large brick on the toilet seat!”
Amber said: “Some people did seem a bit worried but they had nothing to be concerned about as he only eats small rats.
“He’s bitten me once when I was cleaning out his tank but it didn’t really hurt, it was just like pin pricks. He’s not venomous.”
Now she and her mum have moved house, to another property in the village, Amber is taking no more chances with Rolo.
“I’ve put a bit of duct tape on the tank’s sliding windows,” she said. “Hopefully that will keep him out of trouble!”
Villagers seemed happy Rolo was back in his tank and took to Facebook to express their relief.
One woman wrote: “Glad he’s back where he belongs! Please shut your window so he can’t escape again!”
And another added: “I’m so pleased he’s home, I feel a lot safer now!”
