Vine House Farm in the Deepings opening wildlife garden to visitors

Carers and cared-for people can check out an award-winning wildlife garden.

Vine House Farm in Deeping St Nicholas will offer a free guided tour of its two acres of farmland, which has been dedicated to growing colourful wildflowers and attracting bees, butterflies, birds, hoverflies, and a host of other pollinators.

Next month’s 90-minute event, in partnership with Carers First, will include a guided tour from an expert from the farm, who will identify the different flora and fauna and answer wildlife questions.

The farm stems from four generations and specialises in growing wild bird seed. This originated when farmer Nicholas Watts first began surveying and feeding birds on the farm in the 1980s

“Modern farming has unfortunately taken its toll on many farmland bird species which are finding survival increasingly difficult as our modern farms are becoming ever more efficient at reducing weeds and insects,” said Mr Watts.

“Thirty years ago I had stopped filling in dykes, as I realised that they were habitats for wildlife.

“I knew that birds needed weeds in crops, so in the end I decided to turn some of my farm over to organic production.

“In 1998 I sowed my first crop of clover so that I could become organic in 2000.

“We now have over 270 acres converted to organic farming and grow wheat, barley, clover, grass for seed and a variety of vegetables for the shop.”

After the tour, guests will be treated to a selection of hot drinks and bakes in the farm’s on-site café.

The event is fully accessible for people with mobility issues as the farm’s paths are both wheelchair and pushchair friendly.

There are also several seating areas available, around the garden and in the café.

Spots can be secured through the Eventbrite website and any Lincolnshire-based adult carers already registered with Carers First are welcome, as well as newcomers from the local area.

The event will start at 2pm and end at 3.30pm on May 16.
