Rutland Sanctuary Zoo in Empingham closes as running costs become too high

A zoo has closed to visitors and is rehoming its animals because its running costs have become too high.

Rutland Sanctuary Zoo at Sykes Lane in Empingham was fully refurbished last year, and was rebranded from its old name, Bugtopia, by new owners.

But this week husband and wife owners Jeremy and Joanna Aldwinckle, and Joanna’s brother Richard Munden, who runs the zoo with her, announced they are now closed.

Joanna said they were ‘heartbroken and soul-destroyed’ but that it would take a miracle for them to find the money to continue.

“Our energy bills have gone up from £1,700 a month to £6,500,” she said, adding that the energy price cap was not enough and that there was no funding support available for zoos. We have reptiles and tropical birds that have to have their enclosures heated. It’s a requirement - part of their needs.”

Continued care for the animals is the family’s highest priority and new homes have already been found for some at other sanctuaries and collections.

Other animals they will care for at home. Richard will look after ‘Bean’ the monitor lizard, and Joanna and Jeremy have built a 30ft aviary in their garden for the budgies and other birds.

“We ask people to call on their MP to take action to support animal sanctuaries and zoos,” said Joanna.

“These are valuable places, not just to care for animals, but also so people can learn about them.

“We have loved meeting visiting families and seeing them build an acquaintance with the animals, learning about their history and their needs.

“It is probably too late for us to receive help but not for the other zoos and sanctuaries facing difficult times.”

Rutland Sanctuary Zoo had opened daily as a not-for-profit organisation that housed insects, mammals and birds.
