Baston Reserves suffer first league loss for three months

Baston Reserves suffered their first league loss since the opening day of the season in the last weekend before Christmas, going down 3-2 at home to Ryhall United Reserves.

The first chance of the game fell to Baston when good work down the left by Adam Bull and Haydn Rice found Andy Young 12 yards out, only for him to see his effort crash off the bar and down onto the line.

It was seemingly a wake-up call for Ryhall as they went up the other end and having won a free kick just inside Baston half, the ball was swung in and the defence failed to deal with the long ball and Ryhall took the lead.

Baston got back into the game when good work, this time down the right, saw Baston get beyond the full back and Jake Overland squared for a tap in from Andy Young. Once again Ryhall took the lead just before half time, again a long ball free kick the undoing of the Goats’ defence. Keeper Bedford appeared to claim the ball before it slipped through his hands and presented the Ryhall man with an early gift.

Baston got lucky with an equaliser, a long hopeful ball into the box from Haydn Rice saw the keeper slip and the ball bounce over him into the open goal. At 2-2 Baston were seemingly en-route to claiming a lucky point.

Ryhall however got their third and winning goal to claim all three points and well deserved. Baston failed to clear their lines from yet another set piece and Jake Shortland gifted the Ryhall forward to much time on the edge of the box for him to pick his spot and fire beyond Tom Bedford.
