Nottingham Rugby Club’s George Cox joins Stamford Rugby Club as seniors forwards coach

Stamford Rugby Club have pulled off a coaching coup after bringing George Cox back into their ranks.

Cox has joined the club as seniors forwards coach for the upcoming season in Counties 1 Midlands East (South).

The 26-year-old started his career with Stamford as a junior before progressing up the ranks and joining Nottingham.

He was player of the year for the Championship club last season and brings with him a wealth of experience as well as an abundance of enthusiasm for his new role.

Cox said: "I am very excited to return to Stamford Rugby Club as part of the coaching team for the 23-24 season.

"I have always wanted to get back involved in some capacity with my boyhood club which was a big part of my rugby journey growing up, so being able to join the coaching set up here means a great deal to me.

"This will also be my first coaching role so I am excited to get stuck in and lend my experience and knowledge to an exciting young group ready to go one better next season in the purple, black and white."

Cox's appointment delighted director of rugby Matt Albinson who is looking forward to working with the former Stamford School pupil.

Albinson said: "George coming on board is a huge coup for us as a club.

"George is well respected, has had a fantastic season in the Championship and we are excited to have his talent and statue around the club from July onwards.

"Albeit the lads would love to have him in the jersey also, George has a bright future ahead of him at Nottingham and his input as a forwards coach will bring a fresh dynamic to our environment and the way we do things.

"On a personal note, I can't wait to work with George, starting to plan the content of pre-season and listening to how he wishes to set the boys up to be a force at set piece and around the park."

Stamford's senior men and women's teams have returned to training which takes place at the club every Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm.

All players from those with experience to those with little or no experience are invited to come along and get involved.

The first team's new league campaign will get underway on Saturday, September 2, with a trip to Long Buckby.

Their first home match is seven days later when Market Bosworth are the visitors to Hambleton Road.

The league will feature a number of derbies this season with Bourne, Oakham, Peterborough Lions and Spalding all in the same division.
