Match report: Stamford Women beat Ipswich Ladies

Stamford Women eventually came away with a well fought 32-25 victory on Sunday in their home league match against Ipswich Women.

The game was very topsy turvy with the lead changing from almost every score throughout the match and was definitely a contest that had players, coaches and the large number of attending supporters on the edge of their proverbial seats until the very last seconds of the match.

Ipswich started the scoring with a well taken try after 10 minutes before the purple, black and whites struck back with a well taken try from Anna Glendenning.

From a Stamford scrum just inside the visitors half, the ball was fed out from scrum half Daisy Attley to Stamford speedster Jorja Matchwick who, with her copyrighted dodging and weaving, took the ball up to the 10 metre line where she was tackled to the floor.

From the resulting ruck, the ball was fed along the line from Nash Hadley to Georgia Mackinlay who ran directly towards the Ipswich line.

Mackinlay was tackled but, from the resulting ruck, the ball was fed to Glendenning who managed to place it over the line. The resulting conversion was from Attley.

Six minutes later, the advantage went back towards the visitors when they scored their second try and brought the score to 7-10 in their favour.

Attley levelled the score with a pinpoint penalty before it was the turn of Matchwick to score a typical winger's try in the corner which brought the half-time score to 15-10.

Ipswich started the second half the brightest and were well rewarded after five minutes with a push over try in the home team’s corner. Once again this went unconverted.

Following a successful penalty kick from Attley, the visitors extended their lead with their fourth try which gave them a bonus point.

Stamford then put their foot on the gas and started pressurising the visitors' resolve with constant forays towards their try line.

This was eventually rewarded with a well taken try from Sammy Pocock.

From a ruck one metre out from the Ipswich try line, the home team fed the ball to Pocock who quickly passed to the charging Liberty Ashdown who, when tackled, returned it back to Pocock who placed it over the line to put more home points on the scoreboard. The subsequent conversion was slotted by Attley.

Ipswich were not quite finished scoring and four minutes later levelled the score with their fifth and final try of the match.

However, the last points of the day were scored by the home team with Jess Gargan getting a well deserved try which was converted by Liberty Ashdown to make the final score 32-25 in favour of the home side.

Stamford are next in home action on Sunday, March 23, against Welwyn Women.
