Stamford Rugby Club face Daventry in Counties 1 Midlands East (South)

Stamford secured a full five-point haul to remain in touch with the two sides above them in Counties 1 Midlands East (South) on Saturday.

The third-placed purple, black and whites secured a 22-17 home success over Bugbrooke to record their eighth consecutive league win.

They applied early pressure when a well executed blind side move allowed Zach Morley to score the opening try.

This was followed by a messy period of the game where neither side could put together any continuous passages of play.

Bugbrooke won the ball and tried to go wide but the final pass was picked out the air by Steven Fuchs who crossed for a try that took the score to 10-0.

The Stamford coach used this opportunity to move a few players around to try them in different positions .

Fuchs was switched to fly half and his long kick resulted in a line-out which Chisholm won and the ball was sent out to Morley who went over for his second try. The conversion was missed so the score was 15-0.

Fuchs initiated another attack when he chipped the ball through but a Bugbrooke player tripped him as he followed up which resulted in a penalty for Stamford and a yellow card for the visitor.

Another line out drive saw the ball moved to James Wilson, in his first game after a period of injury, and he scored the team's fourth try which secured the bonus point. Fuchs added the conversion to make the score at 22-0 half-time.

The second half saw the game deteriorate in a series of mistakes and wrong options.

Bugbrooke lost a front row player to injury and, without another replacement, meant game had to go to uncontested scrums which certainly de-powered Town's attacking options.

The visitors went to back to basics options and used a straight line runner to go through Stamford's defence for a converted try.

This obviously appealed to them as not long after the restart they did exactly the same again making the score 22-14.

As the game moved on, they tried more attacking moves but the Stamford defence shut them down.

The only score came from a penalty which gave Bugbrooke a losing bonus point as the match finished 22-17.

Stamford now travel to league leaders Daventry on Saturday for what will be the decisive game of the season.
