Stamford AFC take on Redditch United at the Zeeco Stadium in the Southern League Premier Division Central

Stamford boss Graham Drury feels the return of fans' favourite Cosmos Matwasa has given everyone a lift at the Southern League club.

Matwasa is back at the Zeeco Stadium for a one month loan from National League North side Alfreton Town.

The livewire attacker played a crucial role for Stamford during their spell as a Northern Premier League Midlands Division club.

He made his Stamford return in their Premier Division Central clash at Lowestoft Town on Tuesday and Drury feels his arrival will be key for the Daniels ahead of a crucial spell of games.

He said: "It was a really clever bit of business.

"It might have taken more than 50 calls in one day to sort it all out but it was worth it.

"It's given everybody at the club a lift from the players in the dressing room to the fans and myself."

Matwasa's performances during his first spell at Stamford earned a higher level move to Brackley Town who paid an undisclosed fee to sign the 26-year-old from the Daniels.

He moved to Hereford United in the close season after two years at Brackley who he helped to the play-off final last term before joining Alfreton Town last month.

Drury explained: "Cosmos still feels that he's got something to offer at Alfreton but the bottom line is that he needs us and we need him at the moment.

"He needs to be playing football and it was his decision to do the month with us and see how things go.

"He will enjoy himself again with us and being around our guys and it was a no-brainer.

"His best football has been under us because he's got the freedom to play. He can enjoy himself which is exactly what he needs at this moment in time.

"He's now in our building and we're really chuffed with that. I can't thank Billy Heath at Alfreton enough for the help that he's given us and we'll get him the game-time that he needs."

Matwasa is expected to be in the Stamford squad for their home match with Redditch United on Saturday.

Stamford then travel to Halesowen Town on Tuesday night before another tough test at AFC Telford next weekend.

The 3-0 away win at Lowestoft on Tuesday moved Stamford back into the play-off spots with Drury determined to stay in the top five.

He added: "We've slipped ourselves in there again.

"It has taken a while for us to get back in it but we've put ourselves in the mix.

"I don't think we've been at our best but our form is still really good and it's an important time for that to happen.

"The lads are digging deep with players missing and playing a lot of minutes in a short period of time.

"We want to keep that momentum going and we'll be doing all we can to get the game on this weekend."

Stamford go into Saturday's match having won three and drawn one of their last five league games.

Visitors Redditch scored a late winner to beat Stamford 2-1 in November but, since that success, haven't won in the last eight league games while picking up just four points to drop down to 13th in the table.

Drury said: "We've got to capitalise on their inconsistency.

"Our consistency has to kick in again with the work-rate and commitment from Tuesday night.

"It's a long race to the finish and, with so many sides coming up behind us, it was important that we won our game in hand.

"Redditch are only a few points away from being up there so they'll be going out determined because they've got the players who can pull a result out at any time so we've got to be at it."

Stamford will be without the injured trio of Jack Duffy, Harry Vince and Richard Gregory while defender James Blunden is edging closer to full fitness.
