Peterborough and District Football League round-up

Stamford Reserves recorded a commanding five-goal derby day win over Stamford Lions at Borderville on Saturday.

In their first fixture since exiting the Challenge Cup at the hands of YDP two weeks earlier — a 6-2 defeat after leading 2-0 at half-time — this was an opportunity to refocus on the Peterborough League.

Lions set out to frustrate the Division One leaders, sitting deep and reducing space to a minimum.

The Daniels still found an early breakthrough through striker Matty Walker, who has joined on a short-term loan from neighbours Blackstones, but a first half lacking in quality ended 1-0.

Coaches Jake Walton and Stewart Lambie will have been satisfied with a much stronger second-half showing, however, as Stamford Reserves broke Lions’ resistance.

Winger Adam Steels helped himself to a brace within the opening 10 minutes of the half, finishing from close range after some lovely team movement from the Daniels.

Captain Dan Aust scored the pick of the goals to make it 4-0, finding time and space around 25 yards from goal his right-footed strike nestled into the bottom corner for his fourth goal of the season.

Jacob Poxon added further gloss to the scoreline, netting from the right wing for his first goal since returning from injury.

The result also marked Stamford Reserves’ first league clean sheet since the end of August.
