Stamford AFC are beaten by Carlton Town in the FA Cup

Stamford experienced a first qualifying round exit from the FA Cup for the second successive time after conceding a late goal at Carlton Town on Saturday.

Lamin Manneh netted in injury-time to earn the Northern Premier League East Division side a higher level scalp.

The Daniels had travelled to Nottinghamshire looking to build on the unbeaten start to the Southern League Premier Division Central season.

Carlton have always proved to be tricky opponents in past meetings and this match was no different.

Manager Graham Drury made two changes to the starting eleven, with Joe Burgess and Tom Siddons coming in for Will Glennon and Jack Duffy.

The home side started on the front foot and a long throw from Lewis Durow found Niall Davie but his header was straight at Tom Jackson.

Stamford were then forced into an early change when Harry Vince landed awkwardly and he had to be replaced by Ollie Clark.

The game was devoid of any clear cut chances for either side.

On the half hour mark, Manneh crossed from the byline on the left and found Niall Hylton but Jackson was able to push away his effort for a corner. From the resultant set piece, the ball came in flat and almost caught out Jackson.

As the half was drawing to a close, Tobias Liversedge had a header which was held by Felix Annan and then Siddons met a cross from the right but his effort was over the bar.

Clark fired a shot over the bar after the break and then Jackson had to be alert when Manneh had an effort which was blocked for a corner.

Stamford looked for an opener and sent on Duffy and last week's match winner Jon Challinor.

Carlton thought they had scored but, thankfully for Stamford, the assistant referee ruled the effort out for offside.

Stamford were pushing for a goal and Duffy tried to play in Tendai Chitiza but the ball was cut off by the Carlton defence.

Duffy then tried himself when he curled an effort towards goal but it sailed narrowly over the bar.

With the game heading for a replay, Carlton grabbed a winner.

The ball was won by Davie and it fell to Manneh and he raced clear of the Daniels backline and slotted his finish past Jackson.

The Millers will now travel to National League North side Leamington in the next round.
