Stamford Lions are crowned PDFL Division One champions
Stamford Lions secured the PDFL Division One title after a brace of goals from inform forward Jack Travers sealed a 2-0 win away to Whittlesey Reserves.
Lions took the lead as early as the ninth minute when Ryan Brown made a surging run into the area before squaring the ball to Travers who dispatched his shot low into the bottom corner.
The early goal gave the Stamford side the platform to keep it tight at the back and play patient passing football with the knowledge a draw was enough to guarantee top spot.
Brown crashed a header against the bar and Tom Edwards saw his goal bound strike well saved in an other wise low key first half.
The second period saw the Lions up the tempo and force the home side onto the back foot.
Luke Ball saw his shot blocked on the line and Jake Walton was also denied from a fine save.
Sam Rayner was carried off on the hour, after coming off worse from a fierce 50/50 tackle, he spent the rest of the afternoon in A&E but luckily didn’t suffer a break, just a bad gash and heavy bruising.
Midway through the second half the game was won when Walton floated over a deep cross that Travers headed high past the keeper to grab his second, seal the 2-0 win and with it secure the title.
Lions manager James Sheehan said: “I am absolutely delighted for all the lads and everyone associated with the club.”
“We have a young group of players here, all the lads have stepped up this season, we made it quite clear from the offset our intention was to win the league and everyone raised their game and achieved it with incredible consistently.
“We celebrated this success in good old fashion style after the game and now look forward to the cup final next week. ”
Stamford Lions play Blackstones in the Daniels Cup on Saturday, 5.30pm ko.
