Stamford AFC beat Boston United in the quarter-finals of the Lincolnshire Senior Cup

Stamford secured their place in the semi-finals of the Lincolnshire Senior Cup after victory over a youthful Boston United side on Tuesday night.

Goals from Billy Bennett and Rob Morgan secured a 2-1 success over an Under 23s side representing the National League outfit.

The Daniels netted a goal in each half before Oliver Nicholson scored a late reply for the Pilgrims.

Stamford made a raft of changes following the weekend defeat against AFC Telford with Luke Redfern, Connor Bartle, Bennett, Tobias Liversidge, Michael Frew and Jon Challinor coming into the starting line-up.

Reserve team players Cameron Broomfield and Tanaka Govha from the Daniels' Peterborough League Division Three side were also included on the substitutes' bench.

Stamford created a couple of good early chances with Frew firing a shot straight at Boston goalkeeper Jake Lovelace who then made a smart stop to dent Liversidge.

Jack Duffy sent a header just over the bar before Stamford struck the opening goal in style in the 27th minute.

Bennett picked the ball up 30 yards from goal before launching a sublime curling strike that flew into the top corner of the Boston net.

This sparked a strong response from the Pilgrims and a super save from home goalkeeper Tom Jackson denied Nicholson.

The custodian was also called into action to keep out shots from Luca Alonzi and Billy Bradley to preserve Stamford's lead at half-time.

Charlie Marzano and Morgan were both introduced at the break and it was the club captain who doubled Stamford's lead just before the hour mark with a close range finish after Lovelace's initial save.

Both sides then made wholesale changes throughout the second half with Nicholson halving the deficit for Boston with a minute remaining.

However, it wasn't enough to send the tie to penalties as Stamford booked their place in the last four where they join neighbours Spalding United.

The remaining quarter-finals see holders Scunthorpe host Grimsby with Cleethorpes Town entertaining Lincoln City.
