Stamford Women’s rugby team defeat Cambridge

Stamford Women stormed back to rampant winning ways when they travelled to Cambridge on Sunday and left 69-10 victors.

They were quick off the mark and within two minutes a sustained attack saw the ball go out to the left wing for debutant Suz Franks to sprint over the line to start the scoreboard ticking.

The try was converted by the irrepressible Daisy Attley who, by the end of the match, would have slotted six conversions in total.

With the returning backs trio of Gemma Alcoran, Sarah Mitchelson and Jorja Matchwick together with a welcome return from injury of Eloise Westgate, Stamford were the dominant force throughout the first half.

The home team only entered the purple, black and whites' half when restarting after a try.

With Franks scoring her second and a brace of tries from Matchwick and Liberty Ashdown complimented with tries from Chantelle Miller and Nash Hedley, Stamford ended the half 52-0 to the good.

Cambridge started the second half with much more vigour which was rewarded with a very well taken try from their replacement full back who ran from the halfway line brushing aside the visitors defence and placing the ball between the posts.

It took a further 20 minutes for Stamford to trouble the scoreboard again and it took a pinpoint pass from Ashdown eight metres from the line to find the charging Isla Crellin who ran on to the ball and continued over the line and placed the ball down for her maiden Stamford try.

Next up on the score sheet was Mitchelson who from a sustained Stamford attack gathered the ball five metres from the home tryline and ran straight towards and over the line to place the ball down. With Attley off the pitch, the try was converted by Ashdown.

Cambridge never gave up and were rewarded with another well taken try before captain fantastic Alcoran finished off the scoring with the 11th and final try.

Special mention must be made of Attley who made club history at Cambridge by becoming the first woman to make 50 appearances for the club and, with more than 300 points already to her name, has cemented herself as a true club legend.
