Stamford Women defy Storm Bert to score 60 points in victory over Bletchley

Despite the best efforts of Storm Bert on Sunday, Stamford Women powered their way to a very impressive 60-0 victory at home against Bletchley Women.

Battling the driving rain, strong wind and the almost freezing temperature, Stamford took nearly 20 minutes to put the first points on the board.

The almost uncatchable Jorja Matchwick powered her way over the line to score the first of her hat-trick of tries of the day.

Sarah Mitchelson then made a surging run from 10 metres out and, despite the opposition defenders hanging on to her, surged towards and over the try line.

Matchwick’s second and third tries were complimented with a conversion from Daisy Attley to make the half-time score 22-0.

The second half saw both the rain lash down and the floodgates open with a further six tries from the home team.

Catelyn Etherington was the first to trouble the scoreboard with her maiden club try.

This was followed shortly by winger Georgia Mackinlay who flew down the wing and scored a typical winger's try in the corner.

Despite the elements, Stamford never took their foot off the gas and relentlessly pressed towards the Bletchley line.

Suz Franks was next up with a try before captain fantastic Gemma Alcoran ran in a try from short range.

Showing that age is merely a number, Pip Andrews showed the younger members of the purple, black and white army how to score when she came off the bench and scored the final two well executed tries of the match.

With Attley slotting another four conversions, it was an extremely wet, muddy but very content home side that finished the match with a very well-earned victory.
