Stamford Rugby Club head to Twickenham to face Brunel University in the final of the Papa John’s Community Cup
Director of rugby Matt Albinson feels his players have created a lifelong legacy for Stamford Rugby Club ahead of one of the biggest ever games in their history.
The purple, black and whites travel to Twickenham on Saturday to play Brunel University in the final of the Papa John's Community Cup (1pm).
It will bring the curtain down on one of the best-ever seasons in the Hambleton Road club's 123-year history.
Stamford have already won the Counties One Midlands East (South) title and lifted the NLD Senior Shield after an epic campaign.
Albinson said: "Saturday will mark the 303rd day of the lads' season and the final whistle will denote the end of the club's season - for many the greatest in their 123-year history.
"We asked the boys to leave the jersey in a better place come the end of the season and they've taken it to the best place.
"They have inspired our younger purple, black and whites and left a lifelong legacy for all of us to enjoy."
Albinson is hoping his side can take inspiration from the many rugby greats who have graced the Twickenham pitch in their cup final showdown.
They face a Brunel side who won the Counties One Herts/Middx London and SE Division this season in the battle to become national champions at level seven of English Rugby.
He commented: "The players will be taking the same steps as some of the greatest of the game.
"The reality is that for every player who has walked those steps, they have done something special to be there.
"There has probably been tears along the way and moments where motivation lacked but resilience kicked in, belief grew and hard work won.
"These purple, black and whites have forever woven their names into the threads that make up our club badge and have carved memories that will be shared from generation to generation."
Four coach-loads of supporters have already been filled to follow Stamford in their quest for cup glory.
With more fans also expected to make their own way to the Allianz Arena, Albinson wants to create a purple, black and white army of supporters.
He added: "It will be a great club day that will live long in the memory.
"It's likely to be a battle of two slightly different methods of play on the pitch so we need the roar of the purple, black and white army behind our shoulders in the West Stand.
"To have come this far and to be thinking that I am going to have the privilege of leading this set of boys out at Twickenham, alongside the greatest supporters an amateur rugby club can ask for, is incredible and a dream come true.
"The build up has been amazing, from the good luck messages coming in by the minute to seeing the boys faces filled with excitement and the buzz of anticipation from everyone involved."
Stamford have tweaked their preparations ahead of Saturday's showdown.
The players went river swimming on Tuesday night which was followed by a team dinner at the Bull and Swan in Stamford.
There was a light individual skills session on Wednesday ahead of Thursday's full squad session with a captain's run against the outstanding colts team who have been providing full opposition for the first team each week as cup progress was made.
Stamford have beaten Belgrave, Finchley, Sutton Coldfield and Novocastrians on their way to the final with Brunel getting the better of Windsor, Gosport & Fareham, Pirates Amateurs and Cobham.
The game is free to attend and ticketless with the gates opening from 10.30am with the Stamford team bus expected to arrive at approximately 11.15am.
