Bourne Town beat Blackstones Football Club in the FA Vase

Jack Wilson struck twice against his former club to help Bourne Town beat Blackstones in Saturday's FA Vase clash.

Zak Munton and ex-Stones striker Will Bird were also on target as the Wakes ran out 4-2 winners against their neighbours.

The Division One hosts had earlier taken the initiative when Nathan Rudman fired them into a 2-1 lead after Eddie Grunsteins had cancelled out Wilson's opener.

However, it was a case of fine margins for Blackstones as Josh Barrett struck the post just moments after they had taken the lead.

The crossbar then denied ex-Bourne player Harry Peasgood an equaliser against his old club after Bourne had taken a 3-2 advantage.

The match had kicked off in glorious sunshine which was stark contrast to what was to follow later on as the heavens opened with thunder and lightning forcing the players to be taken off for their own safety which caused a 15-minute delay in the second period.

The two derby rivals had gone into the match on the back of contrasting midweek results with Bourne having secured an excellent victory at Newark & Sherwood while Blackstones had been disappointing in their home loss at Gedling Miners Welfare.

That was mirrored in the opening exchanges as higher level Bourne looked the more threatening.

Home goalkeeper Max Peverell was equal to Munton's shot with a tidy save before Bourne broke the deadlock after 14 minutes as Bird linked well with Wilson who drilled home a low finish into the far corner.

The Wakes looked to consolidate their grip on the contest with Peverell clinging onto a shot from Aaron Eyett while Grunsteins made a brilliant block to thwart Zac Allen whose next effort was again saved by the home custodian.

Bourne had enjoyed plenty of possession without really creating too many clear-cut chances and it allowed Stones to work their way back into the match.

They equalised just before the half-hour with their first serious raid on the Bourne goal as the visitors conceded a cheap free-kick.

Cameron Harris clipped the set piece into the area and Grunsteins rose highest to glance his header beyond Bourne goalkeeper Dan Swan.

The Wakes looked to respond and Bird went close with a first-time effort on the stroke of half-time as the two teams went into the interval on level terms.

Bird just failed to get onto a Munton cross at the back post shortly after the restart before Stones in the 49th minute.

Brad Gothard failed to shepherd the ball out of play and was shrugged off by Rudman who slipped his finish beyond Swan.

The momentum was now with the Stamford side and Barrett burst clear but sent his shot against the post.

It was the turning point in the contest as a two-goal cushion would have given Stones a stranglehold on the game and left Bourne chasing it.

However, they weren't prepared to let Stones slip out of sight and substitute Robbie Ellis saw a strike well saved by Peverell.

Bourne then got back on level terms just before the hour mark as a pinpoint cross from Dan Flack was headed home with aplomb by Bird.

The heavens then opened forcing the players to retreat to the dressing rooms for 15 minutes before the game got back underway.

Bird was just wide with a header on the resumption before Bourne regained the lead with 20 minutes remaining.

Peverell had done well to deny Allen with a smart stop but Bourne reacted well to the rebound and Munton fired home to put the Wakes back in front.

Parity could have been restored with 13 minutes remaining when Peasgood met a free-kick with a header which rattled the Bourne crossbar.

Bourne then put the contest beyond their hosts with eight minutes remaining when Bird flicked the ball into the path of the on-rushing Wilson who steered a fine finish past Peverell and secure the Wakes' place in the next round.

Stones continued to push until the final whistle with substitute Joe Johnson sending a shot just wide while the Wakes produced a series of crucial defensive blocks to ensure there was no way back into the contest for their neighbours.
