Rutland’s Horseshoe Theatre Company to perform John Godber school satire in Oakham
A theatre group is inviting audience members to relive their misspent youth as they perform a satirical play about school life.
The Rutland-based Horseshoe Theatre Company are putting on two performances of John Godber’s Teechers at Rutland County Museum, in Oakham.
The not-for-profit company’s first three shows raised more than £3,500, with donations to Blood Cancer UK and Stamford-based children’s charity, Anna's Hope.
In a sharp, fast-paced satire of the 1980s British school system, three rebellious students take you on a high-energy journey, reenacting their final year at Whitewall High.
At the heart of this play-within-a-play is Mr Nixon, their enthusiastic drama teacher, who strives to ignite creativity and passion in his underprivileged students at the struggling comprehensive school.
Featuring eccentric classmates, disillusioned teachers, and a rigid headmistress, the realities of a system that often stifles ambition is exposed.
Will Mr Nixon stay and fight for change, or will the lure of a prestigious grammar school prove too tempting to resist?
Performances take place on Thursday and Friday, February 27 and 28, with curtain up at 7.30pm.
Tickets cost £10, plus £1 booking fee, and are available from Oakham Wines and online at https://wegottickets.com/event/642513 (for Thursday) and https://wegottickets.com/event/642514 (for Friday).
