£81,000 castle-themed play area in Wyberton to be opened by Boston United’s world-record breaking footballer Paul Bastock

An £81,000 castle-themed play area is about to be opened to the public - by a world-record breaking footballer.

Construction of Wyberts Play Park on Parthian Avenue, Wyberton, is currently being completed ahead of its grand opening on Monday (May 6).

The new play park equipment has been supplied and installed by Kompan and includes toddler swings with cradle seats, spinner bowl, three-ways see-saw, gliding track rider, sensory and interactive panels, and many more items with the main feature being Wyberts Castle junior multi-play unit.

The name Wyberts Play Park was inspired by the castle which was located at the south end of Wyberts Lane, dating back to the 12th to 13th century.

Wyberton Parish Council were awarded £24,999.00 towards the cost of establishing a child’s play area from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund’s GRASSroots fund, with the council covering the remainder of the balance.

The council wanted a play area more central in the village with the current play area, situated at the Causeway near Wyberton Sports and Social Club becoming outdated and suffering from vandalism.

“This play area is much needed and will be of great benefit to the community,” Coun Richard Austin previously told this paper.

The grand opening will be staged from 10am with Boston United assistant manager Paul Bastock cutting the ribbon.

The Boston-based 53-year-old retired goalkeeper holds the world record for the most competitive club appearances, his 1,300-plus matches -including 678 for the Pilgrims - pipping the record previously held by former England number one Peter Shilton.

The parish councillors’ aim is to create a village space to be a focal point of the village, and the land at Parthian Avenue owned by LHP, was the best choice due to its central and open space.

The land is being leased to the parish council from LHP.
